I’ve always had a love for reading, and writing has naturally been a strong interest of mine for as long as I can remember. So it’s no surprise that I eventually found my way to automatic writing.
I still recall the first time I tried it—and let’s just say it was far from magical. I had all these preconceived ideas: that I needed to be in a deep meditative state, that my mind had to be completely blank, and that Spirit would somehow take full control of the pen. None of that happened. I couldn’t relax into meditation, my thoughts kept racing, and I found myself obsessing over whether I was the one moving the pen. The result? A page full of awkward scribbles and a strange name that my ego probably made up because I was so desperate for my spirit guide to “reveal themselves.” It felt silly, frustrating, and honestly, a little discouraging.
But now I know better. Experience has taught me that those early ideas were based on myths. You don’t need to fall into a trance, silence your mind completely, or surrender your hand to an invisible force. Automatic writing is far more intuitive—and much more forgiving.
I’ve practiced automatic writing using both pen and paper and on a computer. Personally, I find that typing suits me best. I can type quickly, which helps me keep pace with the flow of thoughts. Oddly enough, I’m also able to slip into a meditative, focused state more easily when I’m typing than when I’m writing by hand.
Looking back, one of my biggest roadblocks was how rigid my thinking was. I thought I had to “do it right” for it to work. But automatic writing isn’t about rules—it’s about entering a flow state, that subtle shift where you’re still conscious and aware, but the thoughts coming through feel like they’re not entirely your own. It’s like typing out thoughts that aren’t forming from you, but through you—Spirit using your mind and body as a vessel.
I recommend starting with gentle, open-ended questions like: “Am I on the right path?” or “What guidance do you have for my spiritual growth?”
If you’re new to automatic writing, a great way to begin is by simply typing out your thoughts. Just let yourself write without judgment or editing. Over time, you may begin to notice a shift in tone or insight—something deeper emerging. That’s when you’re tapping into Spirit.
I recommend starting with gentle, open-ended questions like: “Am I on the right path?” or “What guidance do you have for my spiritual growth?” The answers that come may surprise you. Often, I find the responses I receive couldn’t have possibly come from my logical self—they feel wiser, more loving, more expansive. I remember a time when I was grieving the loss of my best friend. All I could do was cry and repeat, “Why? Why? Why?” It was the only question I could manage. But when I turned to automatic writing, something shifted. Instead of those raw cries, I began typing full, gentle sentences filled with comfort and clarity—words that felt like they were being whispered to me from a higher place. That moment deepened my trust in the process. I knew, without question, that I wasn’t alone.
Lately, I’ve started offering free psychic readings by email, and it’s become another way to strengthen this connection. I find myself entering the same zone when responding to others’ questions as I do when writing for myself. Sometimes the insight comes as a phrase I “hear,” a visual image, or simply a strong thought that I translate into words. But most often, it’s like an inner voice dictating, and I type it all out.
If you’re someone who already feels drawn to reading and writing, automatic writing might feel like a natural extension of those passions. It’s a gentle way to begin opening the door to Spirit communication.
Above all, trust the process. Believe in your ability to receive and express messages from Spirit. Don’t get too caught up in wondering whether it’s all in your imagination. The more you show up and write, the more clearly Spirit can come through. And remember to treasure what you receive—your writing can become a sacred tool to guide and support you through every chapter of life.
