Aurora posted an introduction to Astrology last week. At the same time I was writing this one. I thought about not posting it but not wanting my work to go to waste I hope I can add some value to the topic with this text 😉 There is some overlap for sure but also some other facts that the other article didn’t mention!
For thousands of years, astrology has been used as a symbolic lens through which to view the world, human behavior, and the greater mysteries of life. More than just an entertaining diversion, astrology is a profound system rooted in the movement of celestial bodies—offering insights into your personality, relationships, and life path. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or already have a passing interest in horoscopes, in this beginner’s guide I will walk you through the fundamentals and help you begin to understand how astrology works—and how it can work for you.
What is Astrology?
Astrology is a symbolic language that interprets the energetic influence of the planets and stars on human life. The word itself is derived from the Greek “astron” (star) and “logia” (study). At its core, astrology is based on the concept that everything in the universe is interconnected—and that the position of celestial bodies at the time of your birth can reveal significant truths about your nature and destiny. Although astrology dates back to ancient Babylon, where astrologers began mapping horoscopes to track future events, its relevance continues today across cultures and continents.
The Living Universe
Astrologers view the universe as a conscious, interconnected whole. Each planet is thought to carry its own archetypal energy, contributing unique frequencies that shape personality, mood, and potential. At the moment of your birth, the placement of the planets forms a kind of energetic signature—your natal chart—that acts as a symbolic map of your inner world and life themes.
Types of Astrological Charts
The Natal Chart is your astrological fingerprint. It shows where each planet was in the sky at the exact time and place you were born. This chart reveals your core traits, emotional patterns, communication style, strengths, challenges, and more.
A Transit Chart shows how the planets are currently moving in relation to your birth chart. It highlights the cosmic “weather” you’re experiencing and helps you anticipate shifts, opportunities, and challenges in real time.
The Synastry Chart compares the charts of two people to explore the energetic dynamic between them. This is often used in relationships, offering a deeper understanding of compatibility, harmony, and potential friction.
Astrology offers a wide scope—helping answer questions about personal growth, interpersonal dynamics, career direction, and even larger cycles in collective evolution. It is not a tool for fatalism but for conscious reflection and empowered choice.
The Zodiac: The Archetypal Wheel of Life
The zodiac is a circular band of twelve signs, each representing a unique archetype and energetic mode of being. These signs align with the path of the Sun across the sky (called the ecliptic) and form the foundation of Western astrology. Each zodiac sign has a ruling element—Fire, Earth, Air, or Water—and is categorized by a mode: Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable.
Zodiac Signs and Their Archetypes
ARIES (March 21 – April 19)
The fiery initiator of the zodiac. Aries represents new beginnings, bold action, and raw courage. Independent and assertive, they leap before they look. Their impulsive nature is balanced by their ability to energize and inspire.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)
The stabilizer. Taurus values consistency, comfort, and material security. These individuals are patient, grounded, and deeply sensual. They appreciate the finer things and are known for their loyalty and determination.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
The communicator. Gemini thrives on variety, curiosity, and learning. Talkative and agile-minded, they’re quick to process ideas and explore new subjects. Their dual nature allows them to adapt quickly but can lead to scattered focus.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
The nurturer. Cancer is deeply emotional and ruled by the Moon, making them empathetic, protective, and often guided by instinct rather than logic. They value home, family, and emotional security.
LEO (July 23 – August 22)
The performer. Leo radiates charisma, creativity, and a strong sense of self. Their confidence and generosity light up any room—but they also seek admiration and recognition. Ruled by the Sun, they embody self-expression and pride.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)
The analyst. Virgo is practical, perceptive, and detail-oriented. Known for their intellect and sense of order, they seek to improve and serve. Though sometimes overly critical, they have a strong desire to be useful and make things better.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 23)
The diplomat. Libra is all about harmony, beauty, and justice. Ruled by Venus, they have a natural eye for design and balance. They thrive in partnerships but may struggle with indecision or over-accommodating others.
SCORPIO (October 24 – November 21)
The alchemist. Scorpio embodies transformation, depth, and emotional intensity. They are loyal, intuitive, and fiercely private. With a natural magnetism, they delve into the hidden and taboo, often acting as catalysts for deep change.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)
The seeker. Sagittarius is adventurous, philosophical, and freedom-loving. They’re guided by a need to explore—whether through travel, learning, or spiritual growth. Optimistic and direct, they bring energy and expansion to any space.
CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)
The builder. Capricorn is ambitious, disciplined, and achievement-focused. With a long-term vision and a practical mindset, they pursue success methodically. Often seen as serious or reserved, they’re deeply committed to structure and responsibility.
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)
The visionary. Aquarius is innovative, eccentric, and future-oriented. Driven by a desire for progress and freedom, they often challenge the status quo. They value intellect, humanitarian causes, and individuality.
PISCES (February 19 – March 20)
The dreamer. Pisces is imaginative, empathetic, and deeply intuitive. They often blur the lines between reality and fantasy, drawn to art, spirituality, and compassion. Sensitive and poetic, they may struggle with boundaries or escapism.
Keep in mind: your Sun sign is only one part of the story. Your Moon, rising sign, and planetary placements add much more detail and nuance to your birth chart.
The Planets: Energetic Archetypes
In astrology, each planet represents a different aspect of your psyche. Though the Sun and Moon are technically luminaries, they are treated as planets in traditional astrological analysis. These bodies govern everything from how you communicate to how you love, lead, learn, and grow.
Core Planetary Influences
SUN (Leo) – Your essence, identity, and conscious self.
MOON (Cancer) – Your emotions, habits, and inner needs.
MERCURY (Gemini, Virgo) – Thought, logic, and communication.
VENUS (Taurus, Libra) – Love, pleasure, beauty, and values.
MARS (Aries, Scorpio) – Drive, desire, conflict, and passion.
JUPITER (Sagittarius, Pisces) – Luck, expansion, beliefs, and abundance.
SATURN (Capricorn, Aquarius) – Structure, discipline, responsibility.
URANUS (Aquarius) – Rebellion, invention, sudden change.
NEPTUNE (Pisces) – Dreams, intuition, illusion, and mysticism.
PLUTO (Scorpio) – Transformation, power, endings and beginnings.
Each planet’s placement by sign and house adds another layer of interpretation. Their relationships to one another (called aspects) help paint a fuller picture of your personal dynamics.
The Astrological Houses: Where Life Unfolds
Your natal chart is divided into twelve segments, known as houses, which represent different areas of life. While signs show how something plays out, houses show where it happens.
The Twelve Houses
1st House: Identity, self-image, appearance
2nd House: Money, possessions, self-worth
3rd House: Communication, learning, siblings
4th House: Home, family, roots
5th House: Creativity, romance, joy, children
6th House: Work, health, habits
