Yesterday I posted an introduction to Candle Magic. Make sure to read that first if you're completely new to this!
There’s something truly rewarding about creating your own magical candles. Not only is it easy to learn, but it also gives you the chance to infuse your energy and intention directly into the candles as you make them. I find it deeply fulfilling—each candle I create feels like a personal tool, ready to be used whenever I need a little extra focus, support, or magic in my rituals.
There are several ways to go about making magical candles. Here are three beginner-friendly methods to explore.
Method 1: Personalize a Pre-Made Candle
One of the simplest ways to begin is by taking a store-bought candle—whether it’s a taper, pillar, or small chime candle—and turning it into a magical tool through intentional customization.
Here are a few ways to do that:
-
Carve or inscribe the wax with symbols, sigils, mantras, or meaningful words
-
Anoint the candle with oils that align with your goal or spell
-
Dress the surface using herbs, powdered roots, or anvil dust for added potency
This method is quick, intuitive, and powerful—ideal when you want to work with magic on the fly but still make it your own.
Method 2: Create a Spell Jar Candle
Another beautiful approach is to repurpose leftover wax to craft your own spell jar candles. Personally, I save the remnants from beeswax candles I’ve already burned—especially those I’ve used simply to keep sacred space or set a calming mood.
To make your own:
-
Remove any old wicks from the leftover wax
-
Gently melt the wax (a double boiler works great)
-
Prepare a clean jar with a new wick centered inside
-
Pour in the melted wax
You can easily personalize this candle further by blending in oils, dried herbs, or even placing a small crystal in the jar before pouring. This method is perfect for sustainability-minded witches who don’t want to let any wax go to waste.
Method 3: Roll Your Own Beeswax Candle
This was actually the very first candle-making technique I learned—and it's still one of my favorites. Rolled beeswax candles are a classic for a reason: they’re straightforward, fast, and require no melting.
You’ll need:
-
Sheets of beeswax
-
Cotton wick (cut to size)
-
A little warmth to soften the wax (a hair dryer works wonders)
Here is a nice Youtube video I found on the subject:
Here’s how to do it:
-
Slightly warm the beeswax sheet so it becomes flexible
-
Lay your wick along one edge and start rolling it tightly
-
Continue until the entire sheet is wrapped snugly around the wick
To add your own magical touch, you can sprinkle dried herbs, tiny crystals, or a few drops of oil onto the wax sheet before you begin rolling.
Final Thoughts: It's All About Intention
However you choose to create your candles, the most important ingredient is always your intention. Your focus, your energy, and your desired outcome are what transform a simple candle into a magical tool.
As you melt, carve, roll, or pour—keep your goal clearly in mind. Visualize it coming into being. Let the act of making the candle be part of your spell. That’s where the real magic lies.
