Seeking out a psychic reading is a vulnerable experience. You're placing your trust—and your money—in the hands of someone who may not always have your best interests at heart. Often, we approach psychics with our most private thoughts, feelings, and questions. That’s why it’s so important to be discerning. Ethical, reputable psychics and mediums carry a heavy responsibility to maintain professionalism and integrity. Below are some warning signs to watch for.
Be cautious of psychics who lead with negativity or try to scare you. If a session begins with a warning about a curse and quickly turns into an offer to remove it—for an extra $99.99—that’s a major red flag. Legitimate readings should not include upsells for “special” candles, pendants, or ritual services. You should never be asked to pay more to lift a curse. That is a scam. A good reading should leave you feeling clearer or comforted—not fearful, anxious, or shaken.
Guard your personal information. The best psychics won’t need much from you beyond simple Yes or No responses.
Phrases like “100% accuracy” or “I satisfy all clients” are immediate red flags.
Here’s an example of what to avoid: A questionable psychic might say, “I see an older woman—maybe a grandmother or great-grandmother. I’m picking up an M name… Mary? Margaret?”
If you respond with, “Hmm, no. My grandmothers were Nancy and June. My great-grandmothers were Lora and Minnie. Oh, maybe you mean Minnie? She died of a heart attack when I was little,”
—look at all the details you’ve just handed them. Now, the psychic can reference Nancy, June, and Lora, mention Minnie’s heart attack, and make it all sound like a true psychic connection. In a reading, it should be the psychic doing most of the talking. Be wary of anyone fishing for clues or steering you into revealing too much.
Avoid psychics who make grand promises. No one can guarantee contact with a specific person. Spirits come through on their own terms—there’s no switch a psychic can flip. Likewise, steer clear of anyone who claims they can cure diseases, guarantee wealth, or connect you with your soul mate. Readings don’t work that way. Phrases like “100% accuracy” or “I satisfy all clients” are immediate red flags.
Also, keep an eye on the cost. If a reading is advertised for $10 and suddenly turns into a pitch for $5 more here and $15 more there, that’s not okay. Personally, I’m uncomfortable with psychics who charge $1,000 or more per session—it just doesn’t feel right. That said, there are credible psychics who charge premium rates. My comfort zone is typically around $150–$200 for a full hour-long session.
One of the best ways to ensure a positive experience is to go to someone who comes recommended by someone you trust!
